• About the procedure
Porcelain veneers are thin custom ceramic shells bonded to the front of selected teeth. They may change shade, shape or visible proportions, but are different from full-coverage crowns. Planning includes oral health, the bite, the amount of preparation and alternatives such as bonding or whitening.
• The process
A typical care sequence is outlined below. Your examination determines the treatment, number of appointments and any need for specialist care.
Discuss the changes you have in mind and assess tooth, gum and bite health.
Compare suitable options, including their preparation, limitations and future maintenance.
Prepare the teeth as planned and take the records needed for custom fabrication. Temporary care may be needed.
Assess appearance and fit, make appropriate adjustments and bond the veneers before checking the bite.

• Planning & aftercare
Porcelain veneer treatment commonly involves removing enamel and is generally not reversible. It deserves an informed discussion rather than a rushed appearance-only decision.
Veneers can chip, loosen or need replacement. Daily cleaning, dental reviews and management of grinding or biting habits are important.

• Making a decision
Use these questions when discussing porcelain veneers with Dr. Ho. Your examination and priorities guide your individual plan.
Bonding, whitening or orthodontic treatment may address some concerns without porcelain veneers. Discuss how much tooth preparation is proposed and why veneers suit the intended change. Preparing teeth for veneers is generally an irreversible decision.
Health assessment and shade/shape planning precede preparation and fabrication. Temporary care and a fitting stage may be needed before bonding. Ask how appearance and fit will be discussed and what follow-up is planned.
The number of teeth, material, fabrication and supporting care influence the estimate. Discuss future repair or replacement as well as the initial work. Cosmetic treatment may have different insurance rules from treatment needed to restore health or function.

• Questions
No. A veneer primarily covers the visible front surface. A crown covers more of the tooth and may be recommended for different structural needs.
They may change the appearance of selected irregularities, but they do not move teeth. Orthodontic treatment may be the more appropriate way to address alignment.
Grinding and bite forces affect suitability and maintenance. Dr. Ho will discuss these factors and whether protection or another approach should be considered.
