• About the procedure

Understanding
dental crowns.

A dental crown is a custom restoration that covers a prepared tooth. It may be recommended when a tooth is substantially weakened, broken or heavily restored, or after certain root canal treatments. Shape, material, color and the way the tooth meets your bite are considered together—not appearance alone.

• The process

Dental crowns.
Step by step.

A typical care sequence is outlined below. Your examination determines the treatment, number of appointments and any need for specialist care.

Assess the tooth

Review the remaining tooth structure, gums, bite and any records needed to understand the problem.

Plan and prepare

Compare suitable options, discuss the material and prepare the tooth for the planned crown.

Capture and fabricate

Take the required impression or digital records. In-office CAD/CAM fabrication may allow same-day completion for suitable cases.

Fit and maintain

Check the crown’s fit, contacts and bite before placement, then explain cleaning and follow-up.

• Planning & aftercare

The details
that matter.

Same-day is case-dependent

Lake Eola Dental fabricates restorations in-office. The material, tooth condition and clinical situation determine whether a same-day crown is appropriate; some cases require additional visits.

A crown still needs care

The underlying tooth and gumline remain vulnerable to decay and gum problems. Daily cleaning, reviews and protection for grinding may be important.

• Making a decision

Compare your options.
Plan your next step.

Use these questions when discussing dental crowns with Dr. Ho. Your examination and priorities guide your individual plan.

Options to discuss

The amount and condition of the remaining tooth help determine whether a filling or a crown provides suitable support. Discuss the recommended coverage, material and any existing crack or root canal treatment before choosing the restoration.

Visits and timing

In-office CAD/CAM can allow same-day completion for suitable cases at Lake Eola Dental. The tooth’s condition, material and treatment needs determine whether this is appropriate or whether temporary care and further appointments are needed.

What shapes the estimate

Ask whether the estimate includes the crown, any work needed to rebuild the supporting tooth, temporary care and follow-up. Additional treatment identified during assessment can change the plan; compare the complete proposed care rather than a crown price alone.

• Questions

Questions about
dental crowns.

Are porcelain and zirconia crowns the same?

They are different ceramic materials with different properties. Dr. Ho will discuss the options relevant to the tooth, bite and appearance goals rather than assuming one material fits every situation.

Do all root-canal-treated teeth need crowns?

The restoration depends on the tooth’s location and remaining structure. Many back teeth benefit from additional coverage, but the final plan is individual.

What if my crown comes loose?

Call the office for guidance and an examination. Do not use household adhesive or assume the crown can simply be placed back without assessing the tooth.
