• About the procedure

Understanding
tooth-colored fillings.

A composite filling replaces a selected area of tooth lost to decay or damage. Tooth-colored resin is shaped directly on the tooth, helping restore its contour without covering the whole tooth. The size of the problem, remaining tooth structure and chewing forces determine whether a filling or another restoration is appropriate.

• The process

Tooth-colored fillings.
Step by step.

A typical care sequence is outlined below. Your examination determines the treatment, number of appointments and any need for specialist care.

Find the cause

Examine the tooth and review any necessary images before deciding whether the area needs treatment or monitoring.

Prepare the tooth

Discuss comfort measures, remove the affected tissue when indicated, and keep the working area clean and dry.

Place the composite

Select a suitable shade, bond the material to the prepared tooth and harden it with a curing light.

Shape and check

Contour and polish the filling, check how the teeth meet, and explain what to expect afterward.

• Planning & aftercare

The details
that matter.

When a filling may help

Selected cavities, small fractures and worn or damaged existing fillings may be suitable. A larger defect or crack may need more coverage, such as a crown.

Looking after a filling

Keep the tooth and gumline clean and follow your individual eating and comfort instructions. Contact the office if the bite feels high or sensitivity persists or worsens.

This page is general patient information, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. Ask the practice about instructions specific to your care.

• Making a decision

Compare your options.
Plan your next step.

Use these questions when discussing tooth-colored fillings with Dr. Ho. Your examination and priorities guide your individual plan.

Options to discuss

A small area of decay or damage may suit a direct filling. A tooth with less remaining support may need a different restoration. Ask which findings favor a filling, what material is proposed and how much healthy tooth can be preserved.

Visits and timing

The number of teeth, the size and position of each area, and the ability to keep the tooth dry affect appointment planning. Ask whether all planned fillings can be completed together and when the bite should be checked again.

What shapes the estimate

The estimate depends on the teeth and surfaces being restored, the material and any additional care the tooth needs. Ask which items are included and how your specific plan treats a tooth-colored restoration.

• Questions

Questions about
tooth-colored fillings.

How is a filling different from a crown?

A filling restores part of a tooth directly. A crown covers more of the tooth and may be considered when the remaining structure needs additional protection. An examination helps compare these options.

Will a tooth-colored filling last forever?

No restoration has a guaranteed lifespan. The filling’s size, your bite, grinding habits and daily care affect maintenance and the possibility of repair or replacement.

Can you replace a damaged old filling?

Dr. Ho first checks the filling and surrounding tooth. Replacement is recommended when the findings support it—not simply because an existing filling is a different color.
